BACKGROUND ON THE ETCHING:

Engraving so-called Intaglio is a drawing to reproduce debossed on the surface of a plate (metal, Plexiglas, etc.. ...). This can be done with a direct sized hardened steel, as the burin or dry point, or by a process called chemical etching (metal only).

In this case, the plate protected by a coating is scratched with a tip to show the drawing by putting naked support. It is then dipped in a mixture of water and acid and all areas are unprotected bitten.
Once the plate dug, we use it as template to print the design on paper in multiple copies. Each test is inked in depth and carefully cleaned so that only the ink in sizes should be retained.
It then press against a damp sheet of paper and the design is transferred to reverse, "as in a mirror."
The pressure is obtained by the passage of all between the two rolls of a press.
A stamp is taken in limited numbers. It focuses on the bottom left of the image, the number of the test and the total number of copies. On the right, the signature of the artist guarantees the authenticity of the work and respect the rules of publishing. When the draw comes to an end, the plate is rendered unusable by a burned across, it is symbolically destroyed.

To recognize a genuine engraving of a simple reproduction industry, we must discern clearly the imprint left by the thickness of the plate in the paper. We call this imprint, a bowl.
